Brass Sword Lion Plaque for Home Protection

Home Protection · Peace at the Doorway

Give your entrance a guardian rooted in Chinese folk tradition. The jian shi, or sword lion, combines a watchful lion face with a sword held across its mouth. Traditionally used to guard the home and ward off unwelcome influences, it carries a wish for a peaceful household.

A traditional guardian for the entrance

Sword-lion plaques belong to the tradition of protective beast plaques placed at doorways. Their fierce expression gives visual form to the wish to keep harmful influences outside and welcome peace within.

When might you choose a sword lion?

Choose this piece when you want a traditional doorway guardian with a clear protective role. In Taiwanese folk practice, one documented reason for placing a sword-lion plaque was a neighbouring roof ridge facing directly toward the home—an alignment interpreted as sha qi in that tradition. The setting and intended placement should be considered together.

You can also choose the sword lion for its cultural meaning: a wish that the home remains a place of peace and reassurance for the people who live there.

One design, four lengths

The four options share the lion-and-sword design and include a red Chinese-knot hanging cord. Select the length that suits your intended display position.

The lion and the sword

Round eyes, exposed teeth and a sword held firmly across the mouth give this plaque its distinctive guardian expression. The lion and sword form one traditional protective motif; their role belongs to this complete object.

Brass: warmth, connection and vitality

The plaque is made of brass. In contemporary material symbolism, brass shares copper’s associations with warmth, connection and vitality—a brief material story alongside the sword lion’s traditional protective purpose.

Lion: the watchful guardian

In Chinese architectural tradition, the lion is a protective figure placed at entrances. Its alert expression gives form to a wish for a guarded threshold and a peaceful home, echoed here in the lion face at the heart of the plaque.

Choosing a place for your guardian

Doorways are the traditional setting for this type of plaque. Choose a secure position suited to its size and your entrance; for a specific Feng Shui concern, consider the surrounding layout before deciding on placement. Keep the brass and cord dry, clean the metal gently with a soft cloth, and check the hanging connection regularly.

With its bold lion face and sword, this piece brings a traditional wish for a guarded entrance and a peaceful home into your everyday surroundings.
